Skills Summit: Make a difference in 2018

Happy New Year.  Have you made a resolution yet? Could you commit to working with us to improve local people’s skills in 2018?

In November 2017 we held a Skills Summit to understand skills is Bolton including gap areas and how we could enable employers to be at the heart of the employment and skills system.  Over 80 delegates attended from a number of sectors including, digital, financial and professional, engineering and manufacturing.

The overwhelming feedback on the day was concerned with enabling young people to be not just work ready, but life ready. We also heard how you would like to offer work placements to people needing valuable on the job experience but it wasn’t always clear the support offered to business.  Below, are suggestions as to how you can make a difference to skills in Bolton and how we will support you:

Young people: work ready; life ready

There are a number of ways you and your business can use your experiences to make a difference to a young person’s life and career:

Work with a schools and engage with young people about what it’s like to work in your sector and business.  Your involvement can be as big or as small as you prefer and Team Bolton partners will support your involvement.

Work with Greater Manchester Combined Authority on supporting young people GM wide by offering strategic guidance or becoming a school governor.  The Bridge GM website  can automatically connect you to these opportunities or we can support you directly. On 23rd January, Greater Manchester is running the first Greater Manchester Speed Networking event for schools and businesses. 300 students from Years 9 and 10 will have the chance to take part in an exciting event with professionals from across GM.  The aim of the event is to inspire young people about the amazing career options available to them.  Please get in contact if you would like to be involved.

Offer a student placement

Mentor a young person

All age work placements: Raise the profile of your business

Work experience and placements help local people understand the skills they need to ‘get on’.  This can be a young person getting their first taste of the world of work or an older person needing a second chance at getting back into work.  It also makes local people aware of your business and your sector.   You can make a difference by providing:

• Work experience for adults who want to work in your sector for up to eight weeks.  Ongoing support is provided to employers who get involved.

• Work placement for young people.  Ongoing support is provided.

Please get involved and make a difference in 2018.  If you are interested in any of the areas above or have another ideas you want to pursue please drop us a line at or call us on 01204 336258.
