Bolton - you know it well ... or perhaps you don't.

Chances are though, even if you've never been near the magnificence of our (soon-to-be) city centre you'll still have heard of the place.

Bolton Wanderers, Peter Kay, Vernon Kay, Amir Khan, Fred ‘The Steeplejack' Dibnah and Sara Cox ... they've all got one thing in common; the word ‘Bolton' runs right through them like a stick of rock!

And they are just the tip of the iceberg when it comes to people who are big from Bolton. even the Olympic mascots, Wenlock and Wandeville, were born in Bolton.
They love our town; we all love our town; our heroes are commemorated (fred has a statue in the town centre); our people are the best in the (north) west and we have fabulous shopping and enviable markets.

Businesses love to settle here as the workforce is reliable and industrious. visitors flock to our parks and open spaces and to our cultural attractions such as the Octagon Theatre; the albert halls; and bolton museum as they are amongst the best in the country.
our events are big in Bolton too and attract people from far and wide. The UK leg of the famous international ‘Ironman' Triathalon event is held here every summer with hundreds of competitors and thousands of spectators descending on venues across the borough. and our brilliant food and drink festival is now firmly fixed in the national ‘foodie' calendar, attracting big names like James Martin and the Hairy Bikers.

Now Bolton is thinking even bigger. we're going for gold in 2012, just like our olympic mascots. We have long aimed to gain city status and now we have a chance.
the queen has announced that one town in the uk will be granted the honour of city status to mark her Diamond Jubilee. So Bolton has thrown its cap into the ring.
City Status will:

  • boost our profile, making us more attractive as a visitor destination
  • be for everyone in our diverse town, regardless of their background
  • help attract more major events and create a further incentive to invest and do business in bolton
  • spark a real feel-good factor and civic pride in the town throughout 2012 and beyond
  • give recognition to the hard work, enterprise and industriousness of boltonians past, present and future

Most importantly, just like our famous football club, it will put the town in the uk's premier league of visitor and business destinations.

The deadline for submitting the bid is May 27. We are working hard to make it happen and you can help - so get behind the bid. ‘like' our facebook page; follow the latest news via the Bolton Council twitter feed and the bolton news and council websites; tell your friends. whatever you do, make sure people know bolton is bidding and we want to win.
