Partnership working: a win-win situation

Jennifer and Leigh Sa are both full-time independent mums (Jennifer has 5 children and 1 grandson, Leigh Sa has 3 children) living in Bolton, who have set up in business through the help and support of several local agencies – Business Bolton, Bolton Business Ventures (BBV) and Great Lever Children’s Centre.

 

Jennifer and Leigh Sa attended a ‘Selling on eBay’ workshop, organised by Business Bolton and held at the Children’s’ Centre. This encouraged them to start thinking about self employment as a way to increase their family income while they still maintained control over their lives and the flexibility to care for their children as and when necessary.

 

So they attended several of Business Bolton’s ‘Introduction to Enterprise’ workshops and BBV helped out when childcare for the workshops became more difficult. Leigh Sa commented “The staff at Business Bolton were very helpful and it’s great that anyone starting a business can access these services for up to 3 years – and it’s all free. I’d definitely recommend other people consider working for themselves – it’s great fun and you’ve a chance to make something for yourself and your family. Just contact your local children’s centre and go from there.”

 

Jennifer added “BBV helped with legal issues, cash flows and general business mentoring abd encouragement. The advisers were second to none. They saw us in our homes so childcare wasn’t an issue – which was very important for us – and we even had some evening appointments which all helped us start the business much earlier than we expected.”

 

Jennifer and Leigh Sa’s business sells affordable family fashions through local agents and they are always looking for more. Jennifer explains “Our agents could be lone parents or people with a disability or on benefits.
